Making Beds with ADHD
The fight against entropy isn’t a waste of energy, it’s the prerequisite to its existence
Why do I make the bed? I don’t just make it. I go full on ADHD hospital bed style. Military even. So why? I mean it’s only going to get messed up again.
For the same reason that a Coca-Cola executive once chided a plant manager when he asked why he should keep on cleaning the vats with the immortal line:
“Do you wipe your ass when you go to the toilet?”
I make the bed because it’s the first symbolic battle of the day against entropy.
Entropy is Satan, disorder, chaos.
Entropy is as Dorothea Brande wrote, “the will to fail”.
Entropy is the call to comfort, to your base instincts, to the chaos of a life ungoverned.
And what is life?
Life is the ultimate battle against entropy.
Life, really, shouldn’t exist.
How is it that in a universe tending towards entropy, that life, the ultimate expression of order, could emerge? What is a decision to live if not a battle against entropy, the only battle that matters?
While we have energy, we should expend it, and if we don’t, we will lose it.
